Remington 700 Cheek Rest Upgrade

My buddy has been looking into upgrading his old foam/duct tape cheek rest, and came across a few interesting options. One of them was an ambidextrous cheek rest from XLR Industries. Made from the same light- weight aluminum as their stocks and being only $25, he decided to give it a try. The order arrived in a week ( $6 for shipping). He added a couple of knobs and 2” bolts from the Tacoma Screw Products. It took probably 10 minutes to measure and drill through holes. The total price was about $40. He hasn’t taken it to the range yet but the flexibility of the adjustment, rock solid lock, and comfortable shape already seems like a good upgrade. Pics below.

Stag Model 2 Upgrades

I  made some upgrades to my Stag Model 2. I wanted to improve the aesthetics and the handling of the rifle.

I replaced the forend with a Magpul MOE carbine forend, added some Magpul rails to the top and bottom, installed a Magpul angled fore grip, added a Magpul BAD lever, attached a Midwest Industries end plate adapter, purchased a Specter Gear one point sling which is in the picture but then I replaced it with the Magpul MS3 sling which I think is better and more versatile, replaced the stock charging handle with a BCM Mod 5 to give me a larger surface area when charging and finally replaced the stock trigger with a Geissele super dynamic combat trigger.

The gun handled well before I made the changes. After the upgrades running the rifle was freaking fantastic. I took a carbine class this spring and I put 1200 rounds through it over the course of two days with only one failure to eject. The Geissele trigger is amazing and I would recommend this upgrade first. I put links to all of the items, prices and pics below. Post a comment if you have any questions and I’ll get back to you.

Magpul MOE Handguard – $34

Magpul MOE Accesory Rails – $15

Magpul Angled Foregrip – $41

Magpul BAD Lever – $28

Specter Gear Viper 1 Point Sling – $41

Magpul MS3 Sling – $48

APEX M&P Duty / Carry Action Enhancement Kit Review

I purchased the APEX Duty / Carry AEK kit about a month ago. The installation was a pain in the ass because I did all the work on my kitchen table but the effort was well worth it. Keep in mind that you will not be able to install the Apex Ultimate Striker Block part of the kit if you do not have a bolted down vise or a SW MP Sight Mover. After you install the entire kit you will need a sight mover at the range so you can rezero your sights.

Before I installed the Apex kit the trigger on my MP9 was mushy and had a false reset.  After the kit installation the trigger was smooth and the trigger reset was pronounced. The trigger reset was a 100% better but it’s not as defined as in my Sig 229. The greatest thing about installing the Apex kit was that my groups at 50 feet were considerably tighter. You can see the before and after results below.

S&W M&P 9mm – Grip Tape

I’m relatively new to the pistol shooting world and I had some trouble getting a proper grip on my SW MP 9. I used a suggestion by Chris Costa from the Magpul Dynamics Art of the Dynamic Handgun dvd and put some  Black Magic grip tape on the gun.

I  put some tape on the left and right hand side of the grip and a piece underneath the trigger guard.  This really helped me get a proper grip on the gun and  made it fell more secure in my hand. After adding the tape I went to the range and refined the placement of the tape and I’m currently using the grip tape placement below.

The grip tape was an inexpensive way to improve the feel of the handgun. I looked into stippling but I was not comfortable with modifying the handgun in that way. Here is a great link on how to stipple a firearm using a soldering iron.

S&W M&P 9mm – VTAC Viking Tactics – Range Report

I bought a S&W M&P VTAC Viking Tactics 9mm the other day. I decided on the MP VTAC model because of the combination fiber optic / tritium sights. I read some reviews stating that the fiber optic piece popped out for people but I have yet to run into that problem. The gun came with two 17 round magazines, three interchangeable backstraps, a lock, a case, a manual and a chamber flag.

I took the S&W M&P VTAC 9mm to the range yesterday.  I was shooting the pistol from the standing position at 50 feet at an indoor range. The gun came with three different back straps. I chose the medium one for the test. I put 100 rounds of Federal Champion Target Ammunition through the pistol without a single issue.

The VTAC fiber optic sights were excellent. The trigger was crisp and short. The pistol shot on the low side because of how high the fiber optic sights sit. If I had a chance to use the MP9 in low light settings I would use the Trijicon sights that are just below the fiber optic sights. The only issue I did come across was that about every third round ejected directly back into my face. This caused me to flinch  the rest of my time with the pistol. I read that this issue maybe caused by the type of ammo that I used or not having a proper grip on the gun.

I’m going to test the pistol further next week and post an update. Until then here are some pictures of the gun. I’m new to shooting pistols so keep that in mind when you see the pictures of the targets below.

Bushmaster M17S Customization By K&M Aerospace Review

Base rifle: Bushmaster M17S, gas operated, short-stroke gas piston, 5.56×45 NATO bullpup rifle.

Factory Specifications:
Weight: 8.2 lb (3.7 kg)
Length: 30 in (760 mm)
Barrel length: 21.5 in (550 mm)

Rifle Customization performed by Ken from K&M Aerospace
List of custom work performed on the rifle with pricing:

Standard mod with the slot hole configuration+ charging handle+ upper rail, lower rail and paint - $350
2x 4.12″ side rail – $80
Install side rails – $30
Cheek rest – $35 – very practical and simple mod that allows for a comfortable and consistent cheek weld thus speeding up target acquisition.
Trigger fix – $125 – Probably the best single modification this rifle has seen. It drastically improved the smoothness of the pull and eliminated most of the creep and grittiness that plagued the original setup. Trigger pull has decreased from almost 10 lbs. to an average 6 lbs. 4 oz. on Lyman digital trigger pull gauge. This single mod has completely changed the feel
Gas piston assembly cleaning – $30
Shipping – $25
Total – $675

Overall I have to say that all work performed is of outstanding quality and value and completely changes the look and feel of the rifle. Having previously dealt with a few local gunsmiths that almost ruined rifle’s upper receiver trying to install side rails alone, all my expectations were exceeded by how clean and professional Ken’s work is. I highly recommend his services to anybody looking to add that custom touch to their rifle. Keep in mind that not all services or modifications are listed on Ken’s website, so it is best to contact him directly with inquiries related to any custom work.

My Object of Desire: Smith and Wesson Model 327 TRR8

This post is lacking in content dear reader. It’s a post about desire. My current object of desire is a Smith and Wesson Model 327 TRR8 revolver. When I first saw it I just knew I had to have it. I will not be able to get it this year but I definitely will have the opportunity next year. So you may be asking yourself why am I talking about this large frame .357 revolver if I don’t have it in my hands to extol it’s virtues to those of you who are not fortunate to have one? Well I just wanted to say that I really want it and I can’t wait to get it. That is it, nothing more. In the mean time cast your eyes upon this hand cannon that the Australian Road Warrior Mad Max would be proud of.

Remington 870 Shotgun Range Report Plus Mods

I purchased a Remington 870 Express Tactical Shotgun several months ago. The shotgun was very accurate using the iron sights and I was shooting excellent groups with slugs at a 100 feet with out any trouble. After zeroing the shotgun I wanted to make some improvements. The default stock on the Remington 870 Tactical Express was pretty awful. The shotgun kicked like a mule and I started to flinch after less than a dozen rounds. I was very happy with a Speed Feed stock that I purchased for my Mossberg 590 over 10 years ago so I decided to get one for my Remington 870 as well. I initially was going to go with the pistol grip Speed Feed III stock but after reading reviews stating that the grip was better suited for larger hands I decided to go with the Speed Feed I stock which holds four shells, two on each side.

In addition to the stock I added a six shell  TacStar Sidesaddle shot shell holder and your average run of the mill sling.   The only thing missing on the shotgun was a flashlight. I’ve tried the Elzetta Tactical flashlight mount that I used on my Mossberg 590 but it pinched the magazine tube and bound up the spring and prevented proper loading of the shells. I considered one of the Sure Fire fore grips but the battery life on the flash lights is abysmal. The short battery life span plus the price tag on the Sure Fire fore grip, around $400, made me look for another solution. I’m considering several different options but I have not made up my mind just yet.

After I installed the stock and shot shell holder I took the shotgun to the range and put about 50 rounds of slug and 00 buck shot through it. The Speed Feed stock reduced the felt recoil of the shotgun noticeably. The stock 870 was pretty light weight with 6 shells in the magazine tube. After putting on the after market accessories I could keep 16 shells on/in the gun. The additional weight was noticeable but because of the placement the shotgun was still well balanced.

The 870 Tactical came with a factory installed 2 round magazine extension, picatinny rail and an intimidating tactical choke tube. The tactical choke kept coming loose through out my time at the range. I found myself constantly tightening it and checking to see if it was in tight enough. I could put a drop of blue loctite on the threads but for a defense weapon and the occasional trip to the range I’m not going to bother. With my sparse additions I could store the shotgun with 16 rounds at the ready in case of an emergency. I have the shotgun loaded with Winchester 12-gauge Supreme Elite PDX1 shells and in case a home defense situation arose I believe it would more than suffice.

See the pictures below of the groups, the stock shotgun and the shotgun after the accessories were put on.
